The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) was established in 2013 to advance fundamental and applied marine biology and ecology research – while promoting the sustainable blue economy. This is achieved by enabling access to services, facilities, and technology platforms in more than 70 marine stations in 9 European countries in support of robust, cost-effective and efficient marine research.

Beneficiary

The University of Minho, founded in 1973, is one of the then named “New Universities” that, at that time, deeply changed the landscape of higher education in Portugal. Located in the region of Minho, known for its significant economic activity and by the youth of its population, the University of Minho is playing the role of development agent in the region.

The Flanders Marine Institute (Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee, VLIZ) provides a focal point for marine scientific research in Flanders, northern Belgium.
VLIZ promotes and supports Flemish marine research. Within this scope, VLIZ focuses on open, useful networking and the promotion of an integrated and cross-disciplinary approach. VLIZ serves as a national and international point of contact in the field of marine research. In this respect, it supports the image of Flemish marine research in the four corners of the globe and can hold mandates to represent this research landscape.

The University of Łódź (PolishUniwersytet ŁódzkiLatinUniversitas Lodziensis) is a public research university founded in 1945[6] in ŁódźPoland, as a continuation of three higher education institutions functioning in Łódź in the interwar period — the Teacher Training Institute (1921–1928), the Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences (1924–1928) and the local division of the Free Polish University of Warsaw (1928–1939).

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) promotes international cooperation in marine sciences to improve management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources. The IOC enables its 150 Member States to work together by coordinating programmes in capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science, tsunami warning and ocean literacy. The work of the IOC contributes to the mission of UNESCO to promote the advancement of science and its applications to develop knowledge and capacity, key to economic and social progress, the basis of peace and sustainable development. The IOC is in charge of coordinating the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, the “Ocean Decade”.

With 29 member states, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) has more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology at six sites in BarcelonaGrenobleHamburgHeidelbergEMBL-EBI Hinxton, and Rome.

Seascape Belgium offers services to marine offshore and coastal operators, managers, policy makers, and funders, focusing on knowledge-based solutions for sustainable management and development of our seas and oceans. We operate mainly at the interface between marine science, policy, and industry. Established in 2017, Seascape Belgium specialises in the coordination/management of multidisciplinary marine science projects in support of policy/industry, and the provision of high-level advice to various stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, policymakers, industry, and NGOs.

LifeWatch ERIC aims to accelerate the research efforts of the scientific community by delivering a European state-of-the-art e-Science Research Infrastructure on biodiversity and ecosystem research: a Digital Twin which; provides access to, and support for, key scientific services by applying cutting-edge ICT technology; enables reproducible analytics; is co-designed and co-created with the user communities and is tuned with the needs for research that provides key insights for society, in particular science-based policy.

The International Hellenic University (Greek: Διεθνές Πανεπιστήμιο της Ελλάδος) was initially established in October 2005 and was exclusively based in Thessaloniki, Greece. It was Greece’s first public university where programmes were taught exclusively in English and it was composed of three schools, offering twenty-four master programmes.

The French National Institute for Research in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) is a public scientific and technological establishment (EPST) under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (MASA).

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) (FinnishSuomen ympäristökeskusSwedishFinlands miljöcentral) is a multidisciplinary research and expert institute under the Ministry of the Environment, Finland. SYKE has four office and research facilities in HelsinkiOuluJyväskylä and Joensuu.

Beneficiary

The Institute has the capacity to address practically any question related to biodiversity in its many facets, studying everything from genes to ecosystems, from morphology to behaviour, from molecular to quantitative genetic variation. It carries out work of scientific excellence in basic research, as well as expertise and consultancy in applied research problems (molecular epidemiology, pest control, conservation and protection of species, etc.)

Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) is an independent scientific research institute of the Flanders’ Government. ILVO’s task is to generate knowledge to achieve greater sustainability in the agriculture, fisheries, and agri-food sectors. Starting from a strong anchor in Flanders, their work extends throughout Belgium, Europe, and the rest of the world.

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway’s premier research institute in the fields of water and the environment. We are experts on ecosystems in both freshwater and marine environments, from mountains, via lakes and rivers, to fjords, coasts and oceans. We develop science-based knowledge and solutions to challenges related to the interaction between water and climate, the environment, nature, people, resources, and society.

The BIOPOLIS proposal addresses the upgrade of the research unit CIBIO (Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources), an institution from a Widening Member Country (Portugal), to a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for R&D&I, through a teaming with a leading scientific institution, the University of Montpellier (France), and with the participation of a business partner, the Porto Business School (PBS; Portugal).

The university is part of Wageningen University & Research and is the only university in the Netherlands to focus specifically on the theme ‘healthy food and living environment’. 

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) – one of the youngest and largest universities in Germany – is located in the middle of the Ruhr Metropolitan Region. Its broad spectrum of subjects ranges from humanities, social sciences, and education to economics, engineering, natural sciences, and medicine.
